Albert Fenn was born in Isleham but there are options as to which Albert Fenn with a birth registered in Newmarket around 1894 he could be.
Most likely it is Newmarket Q4-1894 3B:510. This man answers some of the questions 1901 census...Aged 8, Albert Fenn was at Holmsey Green, Beck Row with his father William FENN [31] farm labourer born Greenwich, London; his mother Ellen [32] (née SMITH) born Mildenhall; sisters Minnie [10] and Florence [6] both born in Isleham, brothers Richard [4] and Arthur [1], both born in Mildenhall. 1911 census...Aged 18 he seems to be the Bert FENN working for and lodging with Frederick and FINCHAM at "?? Farm", West Row. His parents were at Holmsey Green,Beck Row with his brothers Richard, Arthur and John [3]; sisters Daisy [10], Ethel [8] and Doris [4]. All the new siblings were recorded as born in Mildenhall. His Army records add to the confusion as they give his next of kin as brother Edward, who has not been found in any other records. On the Register of Soldiers Effects the legatees are brother Arthur and sister Minnie. It is also likely he is the "Bertie" FENN on the Beck Row memorial. Sadly this soldier's pension card simply has his number rank and name, no other details He is apparently the brother of Richard FENN on the Beck Row memorial. click here |

He enlisted in Cambridge on 23rd November 1914, giving his age as 20 years 1 month, height 5ft 3" (160 cm), chest 35" to 37" (88.9 to 94 cm). Next of kin, his brother, Edward FENN. whose address is given as West Cliffe Villa, Fordham Road, Isleham. His address on joining was Morley's Farm, Burnt Fen, Mildenhall. he was posted to the 11th (Service) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, and on 8th January 1916 to the 13th Reserves Battalion. On 12th February 1916 he was posted to 11th Battalion and sent to France. In France, whilst in Armentieres, he contracted TB and was posted back to Depot on 15th September 1916 and discharged as no longer being fit for war service on 11th October 1916. His illness was certified as due to military service and he was pensioned. His intended address on discharge was given as East End, Isleham. He spent some time at Cambridgeshire TB Colony at Bourn and died on 10th July 1917. His death seems to have been registered in Downham. He was not recognised by CWGC but once his death certificate and pension records had been sent to "In from the Cold" they liaised with CWGC and he was added to the National Book of Remembrance on 1st July 2015.
